Hidden behind the facades of a classical house in Bucharest, this compact courtyard was completely reimagined by CMD/LA into a refined outdoor extension of the living room. Merging landscape design with architectural detail, the project creates a haven for relaxation, morning coffee, or an evening glass of wine—right in the heart of the city.

The design approach focused on turning a previously unused service courtyard into a functional and elegant retreat. Two custom-built planters frame a seating area under a contemporary black pergola. A bespoke firepit anchors the space, resting on a lush onyx carpet, with the surrounding flooring in fine limestone.
The interplay of materials—stone, metal and living textures—generates a tactile richness in a small footprint. The stairs were rebuilt using natural stone treads and black pressed metal risers, introducing a sculptural contrast.
The plant selection favors structural species with seasonal variety: Pinus mugo and Corylus avellana bring volume and character to the space. Carefully controlled heights and textures maintain privacy while celebrating botanical form.
A key feature of the composition is the decorative back wall, treated by the specialists from Graesano & Friends with hand-applied textured pigments, adding warmth and depth to the outdoor lounge.
Beyond the garden, architect Ramona Coman reinterpreted the entire façade, restoring Mediterranean details with authentic terracotta tiles, redesigned eaves, and wooden shutter accents—reviving the soul of the architecture while tying it to its contemporary landscape.
This project speaks to a growing demand for small urban gardens in Bucharest—crafted with precision, restraint, and a poetic sense of place.
